Olivia isn't even standing at the Please Wait to Be Seated Sign for three minutes before a girl of maybe eighteen or nineteen approaches her.
"Table for..." the girl stops and stares, unmoving. That didn't take long. "You're Olivia Holt!" The girl whispers/shouts. She's excited but probably knows not to make a scene for her.
"Table for one please?" Olivia smiles at the shocked girl.

I say this at least ten times a year, but this has to be the slowest day ever. We've had five tables in three hours. If we don't get some business, I may have to fight my friend Josh just for something to do. He's the only dishwasher I know with a brown belt in karate.
I pick up a pickle between my index and middle finger, ready to throw it at Josh when Sam the waitress runs in.

"Because we're twenty-year-old straight men?" Josh offers like that's all we need. This is getting a little awkward.

"Urgh. TMI Nate!" Sam goes one way and I go the other.

Sam comes back with a menu and a glass in one hand, a water craf in the other. "If there's anything you need, please let me know." This girl's face has to hurt with the size of her smile.
She keeps standing there, smiling. Olivia's getting a little creeped out right now. She looks around and she's the only one here. "Slow night?" Olivia asks, hoping some conversation will ease the awkwardness.
"SO dead!" the waitress exclaims. Friday is the only night we get really good business with the lack of snow we have now. We're usually packed with snowmobilers right now."
Olivia's eyes dart around and the awkwardness is back. "Would you like to take a seat?" she offers, pointing to the chair across from her.
"I would love to, but I probably shouldn't." she replied.
"Nobody's in here and there's four cars in the parking lot. I think you can take a load off for five minutes." Olivia smiles the waitress gives in. She's kind of awkward, but Olivia gives her that she's really pretty. She loves that silky, straight black hair.
"So what do you recommend?" Olivia asks as she opens the menu. "It all sounds really good." She can honestly say it does as her eyes scan the options.
"Oh, it's all good. Nate is a great cook," she says with emphasis and an eye roll. "I'd never tell him this, but he's SO HOT." Agreed kid, agreed, Olivia thinks. It also seems a little odd that this teen is telling her this kind of thing, but it's probably due to the foot-in-mouth affect people get around celebrities sometimes.
Olivia smiles at her and asks, "So what's your name? You never told me when I came in."
"Oh, sorry! I'm Sam." Sam smiles and waves. "I can't believe I'm talking to Olivia Holt! This is really cool!" Sam whispers.

Sam looks at Olivia, expecting her to make up her own dish. Her diet has been spot on, and she hasn't had a cheat day in a while.

"NATE!" Sam shouts.

"That was Josh," Sam says as if she read Olivia's mind.

In seemingly no time at all, Nate shouts, "ORDER!" Sam jumps up and rushes off. She's getting a nice tip.

"I didn't turn on the tracker in your cellphone or anything." Bob looks everywhere but at her.

"I was visiting my mother a couple hours away." Bob's mom lives in Michigan. Bob looks around. "I love this place!" Bob leans across the table and plucks her menu.
"You know this place?"
"Yeah, I used to own it before I went into managing and security."

I slap his hand away and I turn to Olivia, then Bobby. "H, how?" I'm shocked. Bobby is Olivia's manager?!

"Yeah. Nate was my best student, and he's a hell of a cook. Taught him everything he knows," Bobby beams. "Damn near adopted him when he ran away from home." Why did he have to say that?

Nate ran away from home?! How long has he been fending for himself? "It's not like that." Nate shakes his head. "I'm the kitchen's baby boy. That kitchen was my first job. The five of them spent the rest of the shift just talking and hanging out, getting broken up a couple of times by straggling diners, no more than fifteen in the three hours they were there.
10:00 rolled around and with how slow it was, Nate was all closed up and ready to go at 10:05. They said their goodbyes and promised they'd all do something tomorrow, Sam invited.
Olivia's sitting in her Jeep checking her phone when she looks up to see Nate standing under the canopy of the restaurant. He looks like an abandoned puppy, standing there looking into the falling snow! The wind is blowing the rain and she can see it soaking through his jacket. She's not letting him walk a mile in this.

Nate chuckles and runs a hand through his damp hair. "That's just how I was raised. Accepting help meant you couldn't do it yourself."
"Is that why you didn't let Bobby adopt you when you ran away?" Olivia asks, her voice hushing without her thinking about it.
"I love Bobby, but he talks too much." Nate chuckles again. She's noticed this is his habit when talking about something he hates.
"Where you ever going to tell me?"
"Wasn't planning on it." At least he's honest.
"Nate..." she tries but he cuts her off.
"I don't need sympathy, Liv. It's great knowing you, but I don't need you to baby me, and I don't need your wallet."
"I wasn't..."
"Yeah. You were." Nate's eyes close and he breathes deeply. Why is he like this?
"Can I please just..."
"You can be my friend, but that's all I need. Can we go back to where we were before you thought I was Oliver Twist?"
"No we can't. I can't do what I do while knowing you're exhausted and breaking." Olivia's voice cracks. She hates sounding like this, but Nate is just so... URGH!
"Who the fuck says I'm breaking?" Nate's fuming and for the first time he raises his voice.
"I can see it, Nate!" Olivia shouts back. "You're working hard and often, you're independent and you're putting yourself through college. There's no way you're not tired," she says softer.
"Don't pretend you know what I've been through, what I am fighting. I'm not going to assume you were born rich, but have you ever been so close to homeless that the only net you had was Josh's couch? If I'm breaking, I fucking deserve it!" Nate shouts and pounds the dash board. Olivia jumps when the airbag goes off in his face. "Just take me home, please," Nate mumbles as the bag deflates.

My phone goes off, causing me to pause Mass Effect 3. I don't play a lot of games because I don't get a lot of free time. I'm not even that poor, to be honest. "Liv," I say, trying to get the game moving.

She sighs and bites her lip before giving in. She does notice me scoot closer just a little… "I couldn't let the night end the way it would have."
"I told you I wasn't mad," I say plainly. "We're good, Liv," I chuckle now and there's actual laughter in it, not the usual self depreciation behind it.
"Also," she starts again, "I know I can't stay here forever. And I really like you…" she bites her lip and can't look in my eyes. She's made the mistake of getting close to these eyes.
"Yeah, I'll miss you too," I admit and run a hand through my water plastered hair. God… "When do you leave?"
"Tuesday morning." She can't stop the sadness in her voice, as much as I know she hates it.
I'm is right next to her, our legs brushing against each other. I put my arm around her without permission, but she seems more than okay with it. She curls herself into my strong side and rests her head on my muscled shoulder. Every part of me is honest and hard earned.
"I think I can afford to call in sick to work and my classes tomorrow," I whisper into her hair.
"Nate, you don't have... " I cut her off.
"Nope. I want to. I'm gonna." I smile and our faces have never been closer without us already kissing. We're inching ever nearer. I can feel her breath on my face and she smells like the orange Tic Tacs she probably popped before she picked me up. By the heat in her eyes, I'm guessing he can smell the mint of my toothpaste I had used just after she said we'd go swimming.

"Why not?" she challenges, her voice no stronger than mine.

I'm laying down on Olivia's bed, my face buried in her pillow. I feel like a total failure for ruining that moment.
